María Aguiló Argos

In her previous career, Maria was a successful reinsurance broker and strategic business developer – often travelling between Mexico City and London to serve the Lloyd’s insurance market. Her business background has enabled her to fully appreciate the stresses and strains that fast-paced City life can create. During this time, Maria discovered yoga and meditation as a way of bringing balance and calm into her life.

Her passion is to impart the many benefits of these wellbeing practices and make them accessible to those working in sphere of London City Commerce.

In 2018 we welcomed Maria to the Lloyd’s Wellbeing team, as a provider of weekly yoga and meditation classes.

“We all live stressful lives, with very busy schedules and little time for ourselves to pause and be in the moment. Many of us have forgotten how to breath properly, how to take deep and relaxing breaths to help us with relieving stress and dealing with pressured situations. Many of us rely on shallow, often tense, breathing to get them through the day. For this reason, I have focused on helping people on how to reconnect with their breath in my weekly yoga and meditation/mindfulness sessions.”

Maria on yoga…

Maria has mastered a multitude of yoga techniques and has developed her own unique yoga practice and style over the last 7 years. She qualified as a yoga teacher in London and has gone on to specialise in Creative Vinyasa Flow, Guided Meditation & Pranayama (breathing techniques). Maria attended yoga workshops in Mexico where she was able to explore the ancient Mayan healing techniques of Tai-Chi. She has also attended advanced teaching workshops in South Africa and London.

Maria has developed a series of classes for both beginner and intermediate yoga, as well as themed guided meditation sessions – all tailored to fit in with busy City work schedules, along with additional guidance to support those who want to practice outside of class time. Maria’s special interest is understanding the effect that yoga has on calming and focusing the mind, and its overall holistic ability to improve emotional and physical wellbeing.

Maria on meditation…

Meditation is a means of transforming the mind through techniques that encourage and develop concentration, clarity, and emotional positivity. Through the practice of meditation, you will become familiar with the complex patterns and habits of your mind, giving you the opportunity to cultivate new and more positive ways of being. With patience and regular practice, these nourishing and intense periods of focus can help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself, bringing you closer to a peaceful and energised state. Such experiences often have a completely transformative effect, even leading to a brand-new understanding of life.

Most of us spend our days living in a state dominated by our inner thoughts or feelings. In consequence, we can sometimes be led to believe that these thoughts and feelings make up who we are as a person, and that we have no control over the effect this can have on our lives. Mediation is the practice of simply being. It guides us to experience how we can ‘live in the moment’ without any interference from internal or external distractions. It is a natural state of being, but one which many of us have forgotten how to access.

“My biggest aim as a teacher is to guide you through this process of transformation, helping you learn how to be present in your body and calm in your mind. During our sessions together, I will be a catalyst in assisting you to build a strong connection with your higher self.”

Retreats with Maria…

Maria runs yoga retreats and workshops in locations carefully selected for their natural beauty and tranquillity. Current locations include Mexico, Spain and Sri Lanka and this portfolio is set to expand. These retreats offer a special concentrated learning experience where guests can expand their knowledge and practice of yoga and meditation. The special time and space created on these retreats will allow participants an opportunity to ‘step out’ of their busy lives to benefit fully from the wealth of Maria’s knowledge and those of her team of experienced teachers.
